i am hoping to get a good answer

31 October 2023, 6 – 9 PM

“The events of amorous life are so trivial that they gain access to writing only by an immense effort: one grows discouraged writing what, by being written, exposes its own platitude. Who would see a story in that? The infinitesimal event exist only in its huge reverberation” – A Lover’s Discourse, Roland Barthes

‘i am hoping to get a good answer’ is an installment in the long term series of Mokuhanga prints departing from letters from two lovers dated between 1947 and 1952.

In an attempt to translate text into images, small prints depict objects named by each of the correspondents, the collection becomes visual constellations that orbit around foggy letters. The exhibition explores the multiple interpretations hidden behind a translation: text becoming image, and becoming narrative again.

In this opportunity, in addition to the prints, an embroidered tablecloth features a secret-coded message, and a collective performance around the words and the language from the letters, disentangling the notion of individual authorship and voicing the past into the present.

About Lucila Mayol

My work delves into the preservation and transmission of memory, the creation of fictions, and the construction of history and truth. I have a nomadic practice that moves according to the projects, most of them are research based and include a multiplicity of sources: literature, oral history, letters, archives, art, academy, and even every day life events. Consequently, the results are as well varied in form and media.

I am part of Turbida Lux an art duo working with text, found footage, video and media art with an interest in the poetics that appear when unveiling other interpretations of archival material. I am also a founder member of TEXST, a platform for testing text as an art form and an independent publishing initiative based in Bergen and Helsinki.
